Systems Support Users Group Minutes

Heather Slagell-Strong welcomed everyone and thanked them for coming.
There were 22 people in attendance.

    New Computers

    Ballard McCleskey discussed the new series of computers that customers will begin to see with the most recent purchase. Systems Support has changed the standard to the newest machine available, the small form Optiplex 960, Latitude E6500, Latitude E6400, Latitude E4300, and the Latitude E4200. Systems Support is also moving ahead with a new monitor standard, a 22” widescreen flat panel from the old standard a 19”. All equipment will be replaced on the normal schedule.

    Wireless Keyboards and Mice

    Ballard McCleskey informed the members of the group that were in attendance they would be eligible to be a part of a test group to find good, reliable wireless keyboards and mice. The attendees were asked to pick one of four options offered and will be called upon as part of the test group to give feedback to Systems Support in various areas of reliability.

    Peer-to-Peer Sharing

    Ballard McCleskey explained to the group what Peer-to-Peer Sharing does and how it works. He also explained the rules according to the industry standards and how to avoid spreading the illegal usage. An alternative to illegal programs was discussed called Pandora. If you feel that you may have software on your computer that is related to Peer-to-Peer Sharing (Limewire, ect) please call Systems Support at 438-5740.

    Alumni 117 Lab

    Ballard McCleskey also discussed the availability of a new lab. There is a new lab with 20 laptops, presentation station, projector, VOIP phone, wireless, and TV available for checkout in the new Alumni Center room 117. This lab can be reserved by calling Jason Vanheuklon at 438-2403 or Conferencing Services.

    Cellular Phone Reimbursement Policy

    Eric Hodges informed the group of the new cellular phone reimbursement policy at Illinois State University and the details of the policy. The document can be found at http://www.policy.ilstu.edu/technology/ProcedureforUseofCellularServicesforUniversityBusiness.shtml.

    Client Mobility Policy

    Eric Hodges notified the group of upcoming pilots to test thin clients. In this pilot traditional machines will be replaced with thin clients and participants’ information would be stored in a virtual environment on the servers. The pilot will be on a volunteer basis.
