Eric updated the group on the mail upgrade being done by CISS. There were a
couple of problems where mail was bounced back to the sender and/or queued for
redelivery. These issues seem to have been resolved.
Eric presented a document that discusses the upgrade to the "XP" Windows
operating system and the two ways the XP could be upgrade on individual desktop
machines.
The first way would be to do an upgrade. An upgrade has the primary advantages
of being very quick to accomplish per desktop and all the applications that were
there before, stay on the machine with their orginal settings.
The second way would be to wipe and re-install the operating system and all
applications. One advantage to this process is that any "bad" registry entries,
bad pointers, etc. etc. are fixed/removed. Any issues the old system had will
definitely be removed (replaced by new ones, hey could not leave that out) since
the machine starts on pristine. The downside is that for folks with numerous
specialty applications or unique applications, they will need to go through
re-installing them and reconfiguring them.
The document is pretty detailed and was produced to outline most of the issues
that need to be discussed prior to an install.
Eric is also looking for 4 student workers. If you know of anyone to recommend,
he would like to hear from you.
