  1. Campus Calendaring: Currently most of the campus is on Meeting Maker (exceptions – Athletics and Student Affairs). A lot of people are also using MS Outlook which leads to double calendaring and those who have PDA’s run into all sorts of trouble. MM’s license is expiring 6/30/2006 and the University will not renew its license. Rudy Rudosevich, Steve Coan, and Eric Hodges have been appointed to study the pros and cons of MS Outlook and the Sun 1 system used on the Student Portal calendaring system. They will make a presentation to the Technology Council on October 27th with their findings and the Technology Council will make a recommendation to the Vice Presidents for their decision. The campus wants one calendaring system for faculty and staff and the campus also wants a calendaring system for the students. Sometimes these goals are in conflict. Eric will call on us to provide him with assistance as he sees a need to involve us.
  2. Exchange Servers are being upgraded between late August and mid-October. E-mail will be moved from a current server to an upgraded server department by department and the move is expected to be transparent to the users. Outlook Web Access is expected to be much more robust and those people using the full Outlook will not have to use VPN (it is built-in).
  3. The Windows XP conversion is almost complete, with only AIS to go, with some individuals scattered through the divisions. System Support converted over 400 machines in 3-4 months and are to be commended.
  4. Telecommunications is upgrading the network to a much higher speed. Users could see as much as a 7-8 time increase in speed on campus, but perhaps only 2 times with off campus resources.
  5. Thumb drives (flash drives, USB drives, etc.) should make floppies obsolete. They can hold much more data and are easily transported.  If your area is interested in Thumb Drives, contact Eric Hodges.
  6. System Support’s list of projects is at http://syssrv26 if you would like to look at the projects they are working on for us.
  7. The Treo 650 is gaining some support as the next generation blackberry, but it still has problems syncing, so System Support is withholding any opinion on this product for now.
