Discussed MS messenger usage and
options. Generally, everyone thought it would be at least somewhat useful (with
on exception). Some tips, ideas restrictions.
- There is a max number of folks that can be in one conversation. 20? 50?
- You can pass files through Messenger
- 2 only is allowed into WHITEBOARD function
- Application sharing worked well. Shirley used it with a person still on LOTUS
- Has in/out feature. Keyboard activity senses when you are away.
- Phone messages could be sent and will stack up in the same window.
- You can save a conversation in a file for later review.
- Issues - will people waste work time chatting with co-workers
A. They will waste time some other way (or are currently), so this would not
help or hinder that situation.
B. Many already are using AOL IM, which is less safe and can be used to chat
outside the University. MS messenger is only inside ISU's exchange domain
C. Same complaint raised with Email when it first once introduced. Now it is
accepted as a part of doing business.
Eric will move the request forward to have Messenger put on all desktops.
Next topic Security enhancements.
Eric explained CTSG's plan to enhance security. First, a firewall will be placed
around RESNET. This may be disruptive to folks with student workers that work
from their dorm on special projects. Also, there might be a faculty impact if
faculty want students to share drives with them.
Webservers will NOT be affected yet.
Basically, CTSG is requesting that all mail to and from campus be routed through
their systems. Visualize a pyramid where all the mail servers (like Exchange) on
campus feed up to a single point of entry with the INTERNET. This has several
effects and issues. There are "some" exceptions: Mainframe server, Datatel
server, others?
1. All email addresses bound into and out of campus must have an ilstu.edu
domain designation. Mail.ais.ilstu.edu, etc. will not work for inbound and
outbound mail. Alias's like pr@ais.ilstu.edu or similar addresses will have to
be redefined. Exchanged based distribution lists will need to be changed if
people outside Exchange are referenced.
2. Off campus access to mail will need to go through OWA. Using OUTLOOK as an
email client to Exchange directly will not work, unless going through VPN.
3. Emails will have to meet CTSG email restrictions. 99 max recipients or you
need special approval from upper management. Attachments can only be 7 meg large
(smaller than Exchange now allows. What about printing department print
attachments?)

Desktop news...
Of the 135 new "systems" purchased with year end money. Only 26 are yet to be
done.
There is an exploratory group formed on when and how to do an XP update. What
are the alternatives?
