Eric shared with the group some final issues regarding the OFFICE 2003 deploy.
One issue is that while it was first thought the look of OUTLOOK 2003 could be
altered as part of the installation, it will be necessary for each user to alter
OUTLOOK 2003 "back" to another format if they wish to have it look like OUTLOOK
2000. Eric plans to have his staff place a piece of paper on each desk
explaining the new look of OUTLOOK 2003 and the specific steps to alter it back
to look like OUTLOOK 2000. He asked the group to please be aware of this and
help out that first morning OFFICE 2003 is available in their area. One item to
note also. The email notification in OUTLOOK 2003 can be customized to be as
annoying or unobtrusive as the end user wants. There may be questions about this
new "pop-up" feature.
The OFFICE 2003 deployment will also have another automated feature. The OFFICE
2000 toolbar has been removed by Microsoft. Microsoft now recommends that that
end users put any application buttons for directly launching application (WORD,
ETC.) into the "quick launch" area at the bottom of the main WINDOWS display.
The automated OFFICE 2003 deployment will take all buttons that have been added
to the OFFICE toolbar (like mainframe, meeting maker, etc.) by end users and
build ICONs in the quick launch area automatically.
Eric solicited from the group when each area would like to have OFFICE 2003
deployed. The deployment happens overnight so the end users come in the next
morning and there will be slight delay while the final configurations occur.
Many desktops can be pushed through in one night so multiple areas (depending on
the number of PC's in that area) can be done in one evening.
4/19 overnight: Hovey 401, Parking Services
4/20 overnight: Student Accounts Building, Rambo House, Alumni
4/21 overnight: AIS, Warehouse Road Building
4/26 overnight: Hovey 1st floor
4/27 overnight: Hovey 302, HR/AP, Card Office, Mail Services
4/28 overnight: Printing Services,
UMC (PC), Telefund, Ewing, Chicago
Finally, Eric wants to open up discussion on Instant messaging. Eric briefly
explained what instant messaging is, what the various clients do, and some basic
functionality of the services. He would like the system support group members
and "select" others to install MS Messenger and see if they find it useful. If
it is, then a wider, divisional deployment can be considered. Various members
offered to try it out and suggested other people to place into the test group.
