Systems Support Users
Group Minutes |
Present: Kathy Beal, Erin Dwyer, Tom Fowles, Shawn Hayes, Eric Hodges (Chair), Julie Goodlick, Shirley Murphy, Carmen Plummer, Linda Thomas, Ari Turetzky, Jane Vorhies, Tina Wright, Cheryl Young
Kriss Davis has replaced Connie Barling on the Users Group.
Reminder: after changing ULID passwords, users need to reboot or log off their computer and log on again.
Nicknames are available for e-mail only and can be implemented on the ULID Change Password page. This does not change the ULID, but will install a nickname that the e-mail receiver sees. Actual ULID changes must be processed through Human Resources. Users will still get e-mails at both addresses i.e., the nickname and the ULID. There is no real technological advantage; it is only a personal option. If a user decides to create a nickname, Dudley Roach (dproach) must be notified. Global (LDAP) addresses cannot be changed.
Systems Support is making more Windows updates and will be doing the upgrades remotely. All computers must be logged off at night for these updates. Due to the frequency Windows updates are released, no notice will be sent out prior to the upgrades. Members of the Users Group need to notify their areas about logging off; many staff have yet to adopt the habit of logging off daily.
Users should be able to access their desktops from anywhere—except certain public labs. The labs have specific policies that may bring settings back to your desktop. Jane Vorhies can counteract the situation and will try as much as possible to prevent this happening to those staff who work from labs. Not many users serviced by SS do this, so few will be affected.
Upcoming upgrades to Office XP (including OUTLOOK and Office 2002) will be done as follows:
ASAP—Student Accounts Building
Start April 21—Users Group
Start April 28—AIS
Start May 5—Finance & Planning, Comptroller’s Office
Start May 19—Hovey (3rd and 4th floors) and Planning and Institutional Research (PIR)
Start June 1—Rambo, Telefund, Chicago Office, Ewing Cultural Center
Start June 9—Human Resources, Wellness, Mail Services
Start June 16—Parking, Alumni Services, Property Control, UMC
Office 2002 includes: Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Front Page, and OUTLOOK. Training sessions will accompany the departmental upgrades as closely as possible.
Publisher is part of Tech Tuition and may be discontinued; between now and July 1 a decision will be made. If the decision is to discontinue offering it at no cost, departments will need to decide whether to do without Publisher or pay $38/user for an a new version of Publisher.
It was suggested that, in addition to the beginning training sessions, intermediate and perhaps advanced training sessions are needed for OUTLOOK and the other upgrades.
