E-mail attachment security
Although Illinois State University has many checks in place to help block viruses, new threats are created every day, making it impossible to stop all attacks. If you are ever unsure about an e-mail attachment, please call Systems Support and ask for assistance.
Scammers often send e-mails claiming to be from "Amazon", "Hallmark", or others, in an attempt to trick recipients in to opening their attachments. Another tactic spammers use is attachments with multiple endings, such as .doc.zip or .ppt.exe. If you see an attachment like this, please do not open it. Instead, contact Systems Support.
If you have any questions or concerns about an e-mail you have received, please call 438-5740.
Evening support
Systems Support's office hours are currently Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Calls made at any other times will be forwarded to an employee carrying an on-call pager.
The second shfit is managed by Ryan Grahs, our new Second Shift Support Coordinator. As during the day, our services includes phone support, remote support, and on-site assistance. We can also provide support for events upon request.
Please remember that Systems Support can only provide support for University-owned computers and equipment. Phone support for personally-owned computers is limited to help accessing University resources from home, such as e-mail, network drives, and using the VPN.
Please continue to call 438-5740 to reach us, 24/7.
Small-form factor desktops
For years there were concerns about the smaller form factor computers lacking processing power and overheating because they are so tightly packed with components. The Optiplex 960s that we are delivering to people this year have the same processors and memory capabilities as the full size workstations. The case design helps move a steady stream of air past all of the parts that create heat.
Additional benefits:
- Takes up less physical space.
- Can be placed vertically or horizontally.
- Uses less electricity.
- Less waste when disposed.
- Fits nicely on a desk, making the DVD-drive and USB ports accessible.
Please make sure that the back of your tower is not pushed up against a wall, this can bend cables and block the fan's airflow.
Annual Inventory
Systems Support is now conducting an annual inventory for all supported computer equipment. Therefore, you will begin to see both full-time employees and student workers visiting your area to document inventory. We will do our very best to be quick and efficient so that you will not be distracted from your work.
We thank you for your cooperation. Please contact Heather Slagell-Strong if you have any questions or concerns.
Restarting your Computer
Throughout the day most computer users open and close a variety of programs and documents. Unfortunately, after programs are closed they can continue to use system resources. Over time, this slows the computer down. To maintain your computer's peak performance, we recommend restarting at the end of each week, or as often as every night.
When you are leaving for the day, use these steps to restart your computer:
- Click
- Click
- Choose Restart from the drop-down menu.
- Click OK.
You can now leave. During the restart, the computer shuts down and then starts up again. Your monitor will power off after 20 minutes, however, you can use the power button to turn it off immediately.
When you return the next morning, your computer will be on and waiting for you to log in.
Surge Suppressor protection
Surge suppressors are used to protect computer equipment. We try to replace power strips with surge suppressors when we see them. Power strips are often beige and/or metal. Our newest surge suppressors are black. If you think you need a surge suppressor, please call us and we will take a look. Also, please do not plug high-power electrical devices, such as refrigerators and heaters, in to your surge suppressor.
438-5740
Please feel free to call 438-5740 if you ever need anything. This is our main Systems Support number and it is staffed 24/7. Although we regularly check our individual e-mail and voicemail, calling the main line ensures that you will be able to reach someone every time.
