Upgrade to Windows XP set for Spring, Summer

Published: 02/07/2005

Starting in March, the Systems Support Office will begin migrating all workstations from Windows 2000 to Windows XP.  As it happens, we are the last major unit on campus to make this transition.  We purposely waited until Service Pack 2 was released and fully tested before committing to this major undertaking.

Our staff have spent several months configuring and tweaking Windows XP so it will perform optimally in our environment.  The first thing you will notice is that it looks like Windows 2000 and not the more rounded look of Windows XP.  This, along with other customizations, are aimed at familiarization and speed enhancement.  We will create a web site explaining the design and how you can customize XP to your liking.

We will begin in March with Intercollegiate Athletics.  We anticipate it will take 6-8 weeks to convert 130 computers to Windows XP.  Thereafter, we will be contacting each area to schedule conversion times.
